Why We Love Wearing Wigs (& Why You Should, Too)
1. Wearing wigs saves you money
Before you go crazy on this one in the comments, hear us out.
We know what you’re thinking, “Wigs are expensive! What do you mean wearing them will save me money?”
And you’re right, wigs can be expensive.
But do you know what’s even more expensive? Salon visits.
Shorter styles need to be recut or trimmed every 4 – 8 weeks, medium or longer styles every 8 – 12 weeks. Add that on top of what it costs to have your hair smoothed, curled, color treated, or blown out and maintaining a natural hairstyle can cost hundreds, if not thousands of dollars a year.
Oh, and don’t forget, you’ll need to buy shampoo, conditioner, and styling products so that you can style your hair at home on days you don’t go to the salon.
2. Wigs disguise thinning hair
Hair loss among women is a lot more common than most people think.
Nearly 30 million American women suffer from some form of hair loss, almost 10% of all women in the US.
It’s not just older women who are affected by hair loss, either. Younger women experience hair loss because of weight gain or loss, stress, illness, or postpartum side effects.
There are lots of serums, treatments, and therapies for treating hair loss, but none of them address the emotional impact of losing your hair.
Our hair is part of our personality. A new look can make us feel flirty and vivacious, or mysterious and confident. When we lose our hair, it can feel like we’ve lost a part of ourselves.
Wigs and extensions cover up the evidence that hair loss leaves behind so that you can feel good about yourself when you look in the mirror.
3. Wigs let you change your style whenever you want
Have you ever wondered how your favorite celebrity goes from a bob one day to waist-length waves the next?
It’s not a magic trick or miracle grow. It’s wigs.
Lots and lots of different length wigs.
If you’re non-committal about your style or like changing things up, wigs are the way to go. Wigs let you try out as many new styles as you want, whenever you want, without damaging your natural hair.
Relaxing and curling treatments, dye jobs, blowouts – all of these cause damage to your hair. The more often you get your hair styled, the more damage you’ll accumulate (shout out to all the bottle blondes with frizzy hair whose hair won’t look smooth no matter how many keratin treatments they get).
If you like to switch up your style, or if you want to roadtest a new look before committing to it, try a wig!
4. Wearing wigs saves you time
The thing about having a great (natural) hairstyle is that it takes FOREVER to create.
Despite what millennial Youtubers would have us all believe, you can’t create a perfect blowout in 10 minutes or less (trust us, we’ve tried). Even if you have a shorter style, a lot of time and effort goes into styling your hair.
How much time?
On average, American women spend six full years doing their hair over their lifetime.
SIX. FULL. YEARS.
5. Wigs protect your natural hair
Curling irons damage hair.
Straighteners damage hair.
Blow dryers damage hair.
Hairspray, mousse, root lifters, and heat protectors damage hair.
Most of the tools we use to style our hair damage it in some way. If your hair is thinning or damaged, damaging it even more is the last thing you want to do.
Wearing a wig not only protects the natural hair underneath your wig, but it also encourages regrowth. Wigs, literally, give your hair a break, allowing it to grow back stronger and longer than ever before.
Just make sure you’re wearing the right type of wig if you’re trying to regrow your hair. Choose a wig that’s made with a breathable cap, like a full lace wig or hand-tied wig, that gives your skin room to breathe underneath your wig. If your wig fully covers your skin, natural oils will build up and stunt your hair’s regrowth.
Wigs can protect your hair from bad weather, too.
In climates with very dry air, like in the desert or very cold places, our hair can become brittle and dry.
Wigs protect your hair from the elements.
6. Wigs are the only way to guarantee a great hair day
Nothing affects how we feel about our looks more than our hair.
We can wear the same makeup with the same outfit on two different days and feel totally different about ourselves based on how our hair looked those days.
When your hair looks good, you feel good. Plain and simple.
And the only way to guarantee that you will have a great hair day is to wear a wig.
Most wigs come pre-styled and ready to wear. All you need to do is run a comb through your hair, shake it out, put on your wig, and head out the door.
You’ll never need to worry if you’ve parted your hair in the perfect spot ever again.
